Pierre Chemaly was born in a mining town Africa in 1957 of South African and European heritage. He moved to Los Angeles in his early twenties attending California Institute of The Arts, studying Art, Film and Photography and earning his BFA in 1984. Over the years he studied at various institutions including UCLA, The Art Students League New York, and Falmouth University in the UK, earning his MA.
He paints and photographs while working in the film industry in Hollywood and Los Angeles as an independent cinematographer and director. Formative influences in his work include: Agnes Martin, Paul Klee, Joan Miro, Aaron Siskind and Ansel Adams. He paints using mixed media and digital and his photographic art is composed in film and/or digital, working primarily in the abstract.
Themes he explores: “Deconstruction and Reconstruction” “Boundaries and Dissolution” “Search and Discovery” He employs minimal elements then composes these primaries into paintings and photographs. His studio is north of Los Angeles.
